A 19-year-old woman was arrested Thursday and charged with murder in the shooting death of a man accused of assaulting a METRO bus driver in northwest Houston immediately beforehand.

Asia Law, the woman, is accused of fatally shooting Kennedy Asante, 28, in the 5300 block of Antoine Drive at around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Houston Police Department.

Law also faces an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge for allegedly shooting at two other people at a METRO bus stop in a different location on Monday, according to Harris County court documents. The same METRO police department officer responded to both incidents and identified Law as a suspect through surveillance footage and interviews with complainants and witnesses, court records show.

The public defender assigned to represent Law at a bail hearing for the aggravated assault charge declined to comment on that case while noting he has not been assigned to represent Law in the murder case. No other attorneys for Law were listed in online county court records as of Friday.

Before Tuesday’s shooting, Asante attempted to board a METRO bus, according to police, who said in a Friday news release that the bus driver refused to give him a ride due to a “previous disturbance.”

Law was on the bus at the time and then exited the bus and waited outside of the entrance door, police said. After the bus driver refused to allow Asante to ride the bus, Asante allegedly assaulted the bus driver and started to flee, according to police, who allege that Law then removed a pistol from her waistband and fired multiple gunshots at Asante.

Police officers arrived at the scene and found Asante suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Law is accused of fleeing the scene after the shooting. She was arrested two days later and booked into the Harris County Jail.
