PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix Police released new video showing what led up to an officer-involved shooting involving a woman armed with a knife late last month.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. on April 27 near 40th Street and Indian School Road. Officers responded to reports of a woman walking in the road holding a knife.
When officers arrived, they found a woman matching the 911 caller’s description. The caller told dispatchers he tried to ask the woman if she was OK, but she allegedly tried to stab his truck.
She moved out of the road and continued walking on the sidewalk, still holding the knife.
Officers told her to drop the knife, but she ignored them and kept walking.
“Stop!” one officer yells. “We want to help you. Please get on the ground,” the other officer says.
One of the officers fired his less-lethal weapon, but the woman did not stop.
While still armed with the knife, the woman made her way toward a building with people inside. That’s when the officer-involved shooting happened.
She fell to the ground, but police say she continued to hold the knife. “You shot me!” the woman yelled repeatedly.
Officers approached her once it was safe and began first aid until fire crews arrived. She was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
The officer involved in the shooting is assigned to the Mountain View Precinct and has four years of service with the department.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is still investigating, and the case will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. An internal investigation is also underway by Phoenix PD.
