Re: “Zelenskyy slams Russia’s ‘utter cynicism’ as strikes kill 22 in Ukraine before announced ceasefire” (May 5): This article reminded me why I just returned from Washington, D.C., where I joined 700 advocates at the Ukraine Action Summit. Russia’s violence is sustained by billions in oil revenue funneled through a “shadow fleet” of tankers bypassing sanctions. As part of a San Diego delegation with Shield of Freedom, I met with congressional offices to advocate for cutting off the revenue funding these attacks.

Walking the halls of Congress with fellow San Diegans, including a mother and daughter who fled Ukraine after their home was destroyed, put a local face on this tragedy.

I am grateful to Reps. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, and Scott Peters, D-San Diego, for co-sponsoring H.R.6856. I urge our other local representatives to join them. We must cut off the funding for this violence to ensure global security; it is the most direct path to a lasting peace.
