SAN MARCOS, CA — Families will be able to purchase discounted computers and laptops during a community distribution event Saturday at San Marcos Elementary School.
The event, hosted by Computers 2 Kids in partnership with San Marcos Unified School District and Cox Communications, is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m.
“The distribution is open to all families, students, individuals who are in need of technology,” Computers 2 Kids spokesperson Cheryl Floros told Patch.
“Computers 2 Kids serves low-income and underserved families, and eligibility is based on income guidelines commonly used in California, including participation in qualifying assistance programs and other indicators of financial need,” she added. “Because the cost of living in California is significantly higher than many other parts of the country, these guidelines often extend beyond the traditional federal poverty level to better reflect the realities facing working families in our region.”
Refurbished desktop computers and laptops will be available at reduced prices, with desktop models starting at $100, organizers said. Families receiving government assistance may qualify for a $50 discount on select computers.
Attendees will also receive information about low-cost home internet options and digital inclusion resources.
“Access to technology is essential for students and families to succeed in today’s world,” Computers 2 Kids CEO Cheri Pierre said in a statement.
Advance registration is required. Families can register online, text “Apply SMUSD” to 858-375-9108 or call 858-200-9788 for more information.
