HOUSTON – The WNBA is officially returning to Houston.
The league announced Wednesday that WNBA and NBA owners unanimously approved the sale of the Connecticut Sun and the team’s relocation to Houston ahead of the 2027 season.
The franchise is being sold by the Mohegan Tribe to Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta.
The Sun will continue to play in Connecticut through the remainder of the 2026 season before officially moving to Houston in 2027.
The move marks the return of the WNBA to Houston for the first time since the Houston Comets folded in 2008. The Comets were one of the league’s original franchises and won the WNBA’s first four championships.
League officials have not announced where the franchise will play home games once it arrives in Houston.
The approval comes after months of speculation that the WNBA was preparing to return to one of the league’s original basketball markets.
