A 48-year man was killed in a fight on a Bronx subway train with a man he awoke by hitting with a cane, police sources said Thursday.
The clash began when the victim, who police believe may have been homeless, struck or prodded the suspect, who was asleep on a No. 1 train inside the 242nd St-Van Cortland Park station about 3:05 a.m. Wednesday, cops said. The station is the northern terminus for the line.
The 68-year-old suspect awoke and got into an argument with the victim that turned physical. As they grappled, the victim apparently went into cardiac arrest, the source said.
The fight ended with the suspect pinning the victim to the floor, police sources told amNewYork.
A transit worker came upon the scene, with the victim lying on the floor unconscious, and authorities were alerted.
Medics rushed the victim to New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital but he could not be saved. His name was not immediately released.
Keith Plummer was arrested at the scene for manslaughter. He lives in South Jamaica, Queens, according to cops, and has about three dozen prior arrests.
Plummer’s arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court was pending Thursday.
