A woman who was inside a North Philadelphia apartment was struck in the leg by a stray bullet as a group of teens fired shots in the air early Friday morning, police said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 3 a.m. A witness told police four or five armed teenagers on 8th Street and Susquehanna Avenue fired at least 18 shots in the air when a stray bullet went through the window and drywall of an apartment complex along the 2200 block of North 8th Street.

The bullet then struck a 25-year-old woman who was inside a second-floor bedroom with a group of other women at the time, according to investigators.

The woman – who was shot once in the leg – was taken to the hospital and placed in stable condition. Police believe she was an innocent bystander.

“We don’t believe she was an intended target,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. “We’re not getting any information that there was any type of arguments or fights or altercations.”

In a morning update, police said, investigators believe the suspects in this shooting — believed to be four teen boys — fled the scene westbound on 8th street after the shooting occurred. At the scene, police said, investigators recovered 12 spent 40 caliber shells and six 9mm shells.

Police did not release more details on the teens but Chief Inspector Small said there were numerous surveillance cameras nearby.

“Hopefully these cameras recorded something that can help us with this shooting investigation,” Small said.
