PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A man remains in critical condition after police found him lying unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head on Kater Street.
Surveillance video obtained by Action News shows men walking along the sidewalk on the 1100 block of Kater Street before suddenly running as gunfire erupts moments later.
Neighbors described a rapid barrage of shots.
“Big bangs of shots, like 25 after each other,” said Ramzi Alyan.
Bullets were fired just inches from their front doors, with some people ducking for cover.
“Last night I heard a bunch of gunshots, and then I looked out and saw a man face down on Kater Street. Within seconds, there were five or six different cops,” one neighbor said.
Police said officers were already in the area and heard the shots shortly after 10:30 p.m.
“Upon arrival to Kater, they observed one male on the ground, unresponsive, shot in his head. They scooped that male and took him to the hospital,” said Philadelphia Police Captain Timothy Stephan.
Investigators said they recovered 14 .40-caliber shell casings and six 9mm casings, along with two handguns at the scene. It wasn’t until daylight that a neighbor noticed it was more than what was found on the street.
“Next thing I know, my house is a crime scene,” a neighbor said. “There were like 16 out there, plus the eight or nine here they didn’t even know about last night.”
A nearby home was struck multiple times, with bullet holes piercing the exterior of the first and second floors, a window and a fence. An abandoned car at the scene was also hit by gunfire at least four times.
Residents said the normally quiet block felt unsafe Thursday night.
“It is frightening, it is scary. You think you’re safe when you are at home and crime comes right to your front door,” said Cornelia Haymond.
Investigators also found Ray-Ban Meta glasses at the scene. It is unclear whether they were recording or capturing any evidence.
Officials have not revealed any information on the suspects.
