Kash Mayfield continues a strong start to his second professional season, tying a career-high with nine strikeouts over five shutout innings in high Single-A Fort Wayne’s 12-3 win at Cedar Rapids.

The 21-year-old left-hander allowed just one hit and did not walk a batter.

Mayfield is 3-1 with a 1.52 ERA, 35 strikeouts and 13 walks through 29 ⅔ innings. Opposing hitters have an .099 average so far off Mayfield, who is ranked No. 4 among Padres prospects by MLB.com.

Right fielder Kavares Tears (.742 OPS) went 3-for-5 with his third homer, a double and four RBIs.

Second baseman Rosman Verdugo (.713 OPS) went 3-for-5 with his sixth homer, a double and two RBIs.

Left fielder Alex McCoy (.950 OPS) went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIS and two runs scored.

Fort Wayne is 18-19.

LHP Jackson Wolf (5.29 ERA) allowed two runs in five innings in the start and RHP Garrett Hawkins (5.94 ERA) allowed two runs in one inning. CF Nick Schnell (.849 OPS) hit his seventh homer. SS Mason McCoy (.843 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits.

Missions 10, Wichita 3: LHP Omar Cruz (7.00 ERA) struck out nine while allowed two unearned runs in 3⅓ innings in the start. RF Tirso Ornelas (.804 OPS) went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. SS Carson Tucker (.891 OPS), DH Leandro Cedeno (.949 OPS), CF Braedon Karpathios (.671 OPS) and 3B Ryan Jackson (.644 OPS) all had two hits. Jackson drove in three runs. C Ethan Salas (.916 OPS) went 1-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and his eighth steal.

 

LOW SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (22-15)

Storm 14, Rancho Cucamonga 0: LHP Kruz Schoolcraft (8.15 ERA), last year’s first-rounder, turned in the first scoreless appearance of his career. To do it, he had to strike out four to strand five walks over three innings. Schoolcraft didn’t allow a hit. RHP Nick Falter (1-1, 1.82 ERA) earned the win with three scoreless innings. 1B Kerrington Cross (.940 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits, including his second homer. SS Jorge Quintana (.644 OPS) drove in two runs on three hits, including a double. C Ty Harvey (.955 OPS), RF Qrey Lott (.918 OPS) and LF Conner Westenburg (.911 OPS) all had two hits. Harvey, RF George Bilecki (.683 OPS) and DH Truitt Madonna (.693 OPS) all had doubles.

 

ROOKIE ACL PADRES (4-6)

Padres 4, Rockies 3 (7): RHP Ty Adcock (1-0, 0.00 ERA) allowed a hit in a scoreless inning in his third rehab appearance. RHP Michael Salina (27.00 ERA) allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning. 2B Santiago Vargas (.912 OPS) hit a grand slam for his first homer.
