A gunman shot two women during an armed robbery in the West Loop overnight, police said.

The two victims were standing in the 600 block of West Randolph Street around 12:50 a.m. when the gunman exited a white SUV and approached them, according to a CPD media statement. He demanded their property, took a purse from one woman, then opened fire, striking both women, police said.

A 21-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the knee and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition. A 33-year-old woman was taken to Rush Hospital with a graze wound to her hip, CPD said.

Witnesses described the shooter as a Black male wearing a tan shirt who fled in a white Kia, possibly a Sorento, with a damaged front windshield. Other people were in the vehicle with him, according to people at the scene.

Editor’s note: While CPD said the shooting occurred at 12:50 a.m., radio transmissions indicate it occurred approximately 10 minutes earlier.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.

Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
