CAVE CREEK, AZ (AZFamily) — A highway north of Phoenix is closed Sunday morning following a violent overnight crash.
Just before 11 p.m., first responders were called to the two-car crash near Carefree Highway and 12th Street.
Authorities arrived and found a pickup truck and a sedan on fire, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Six people were taken to a hospital, with three in critical condition.
Deputies say the at-fault driver is being investigated for possible impairment.
Arizona’s Family crews at the scene saw extensive fire damage to both vehicles. Detectives were also seen placing evidence markers as they worked to determine what led to the crash.

Deputies say Carefree Highway will be closed in both directions from 7th Street to 12th Street for several hours during the investigation.
