On a blazing hot weekend, 9th Avenue stopped being a traffic corridor and became Hell’s Kitchen’s front porch — W42ST photographers David Gray and Steve Hill turned out to capture the crowds and characters.

The 51st Ninth Avenue Food Festival filled the avenue from W42nd to W57th Streets on Saturday and Sunday, as crowds poured into the neighborhood for grilled corn, smoky skewers, cold drinks, street games, selfies, dogs, dancing, people-watching — and the annual ritual of running into half the people you know. With sunshine all weekend, temperatures climbed into the high 70s on Saturday before Sunday pushed into the high 80s, giving the whole event the feeling of summer arriving slightly ahead of schedule.
