The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium has welcomed the cutest new addition to their family. A female African lion cub, who is expected to maker her debut to the public in the summer, was born on April 5 to mother Scarlett and father Hondo.“The cub is doing great and exceeding milestones,” says Assistant Curator of Mammals Karen Vacco. “Scarlett is an excellent mother and has been caring for the cub well. Animal care staff are carefully monitoring healthy nursing patterns and normal maternal behavior.”Both Scarlett and her cub are currently in a maternity den to bond and enjoy comfortable and quiet surroundings together away from the public.Before the pair can be introduced back into the lion habitat, the cub will need to demonstrate strong mobility skills. Prior to Hondo and Scarlett’s cub, there were three cubs born to Abana in July of 2020. The cub’s birth is considered a major victory for the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s Lion Species Survival Plan.
