Solana Beach City Council members recently received an update from San Diego Gas & Electric on utility undergrounding work, which includes up to a year to secure easements with property owners that allow the project to continue.
“SDG&E has been doing a great job working with our residents and our staff to reach out and secure some of those easements and move forward with the design,” Solana Beach City Manager Alyssa Muto said.
There are three undergrounding districts in Solana Beach: Pacific Avenue, which extends from North Helix Avenue to Solana Vista Drive and includes Fletcher Cove Community Center and the Overlook Park; Glenmont, which covers Glenmont Drive, Mar Vista Drive, Rawl Place, Marview Drive, Ford Avenue and Canyon Drive from Rawl Place to Ford Avenue; and Nardo, Granados and Rios, which includes Nardo Avenue from Lomas Santa Fe Drive to the south of Lirio Street, South Granados Avenue from Lomas Santa Fe to the south end of the street, on South Rios Avenue from Lomas Santa Fe to the south end of the street, the east end of Rosa Street, Palmitas Street, Lirio Street, Corto Street and the south end of Via de Vista.
Preliminary design has been completed in the Pacific Avenue district. Following final design, SDG&E will issue requests for proposals
Preliminary design is also complete in Glenmont, where three easements are required. Six easements have been obtained since last September, according to SDG&E. Design is being finalized, pending the necessary easements.
For Nardo, Granados and Rios, preliminary design is complete and three easements are required. Design is proceeding in anticipation that the easements will be in place.
Solana Beach Deputy Mayor Kristi Becker asked for more communication to residents about the timelines involved in the project, since many have expressed frustration at the pace.
“It would be great to have people understand that things are going on all this time,” Becker said.
“We look forward to further collaborating with the city on this effort as envisioned by the community and the council,” said Joe Garibaldi, an SDG&E senior public affairs manager.
