Another step in the right direction this week for gasoline prices: The average for regular in the Philadelphia market was down 4.8 cents per gallon to $3.15 for the week ending with Sunday.

GasBuddy crunches the numbers of 979 spots to fuel up in the Philadelphia market and comes up with the average price.

The market includes sections of Wilmington and New Jersey, where prices are nearly always lower than Pennsylvania. The average also includes the Costco, Sam’s and BJ’s stores in the region, where it’s nearly always cheaper than your corner Wawa and other convenience stores.

The $3.15 per gallon is 10.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and 41.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in the Philadelphia market was $2.89 on Sunday, down 6 cents from a week ago, and the most expensive was $3.89, down a dime in a week. The range for the week is a buck.

In the spring, the Philadelphia market average did slip below $3.10 per gallon for a couple of weeks before turning up.

The $3.15 per gallon is the fifth highest price for a July 20 behind $4.60, $3.71, $3.56 and $3.24 in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2021, respectively. No. 6 is $3.05 from 2018, and that’s the only other average at $3 or higher.

There were similar downturns in adjoining areas, with the New Jersey average down 3.1 cents per gallon to $3.03, and in Wilmington, down 5.0 cents to $2.97.

The national average price of regular was down 1.7 cents per gallon in the past week to $3.09, off 11.5 cents per gallon from a month ago and 37.7 cents from a year ago, according to GasBuddy.

However, the national average price of diesel increased 1.7 cents in the past week to $3.69 per gallon.

“The national average price of gasoline slipped slightly over the last week, falling alongside oil, which dropped more than $2 per barrel,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “While I don’t expect major movement in the national average as we approach August, states impacted by price cycling will likely continue to experience more volatile price swings, while others will see relative stability.”

Delaware often sees radical moves in its average due to price cycling.
