Glassell Park—The L.A. County Board of Education today voted to deny the California Creative Learning Academy Middle School’s appeal asking for a renewal of its charter.
The County Board voted 6-2 to follow the County Superintendent of School’s recommendation and deny the appeal.
In February, the LAUSD Board of Education denied renewal of the charter for Cal Creative, as the school is called.
School leaders turned to the County’s Board of Education to appeal the LAUSD decision.
The L.A. County Office of Education staff said Cal Creative is an underperforming school with chronic absenteeism and declining enrollment. In addition, it is in a financially precarious position.
Linda Lee, the school’s executive director and principal, said all the issues are being addressed and urged the County board to review data from the current academic year that shows the academic progress students have made in the fall and spring. She asked for a two-year charter renewal.
Parents and school employees spoke in favor of Cal Creative prior to the County Board’s vote.
Cal Creative Middle School’s charter expires June 30.
