On June 6, another grad — Marc Rebillet, alias “Loop Daddy” — will headline a benefit concert to ensure the Booker T. machine keeps humming. All profits from the show will go to the high school and Amplified Minds, a Dallas mental health nonprofit that offers free therapy as well as LGBTQIA+ support and group counseling.
“I’m unbelievably pumped for this show,” the singer-keyboardist said in a statement. Rebillet (class of 2007) came to fame in the late 2010s with his improvised electronic/funk tunes. Jones is a fan, inviting him on her Norah Jones Is Playing Along podcast, which spawned the frantic single “Everybody Say Goodbye.”
He’ll take the stage after sets by three finalists for the Jambaloo Music Prize, a new award honoring a full-length album by an independent D-FW musician: Competing for the trophy and its $20,000 prize are soul-pop singer Paul Schalda, singer-songwriter Matthew McNeal and Booker T. grad Aaron Daane, who records as Aaron’s Book Club. The winner will be announced at the show.
Rebillet said he was thrilled to work with Jambaloo co-founder Corey Pond, an early supporter.
“Not only do I get to put on a show with one of the first people to ever give me a platform, but we get to do it for the benefit of Dallas artists and the beautiful Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where I went to school. Doesn’t get better than that.”
