Dangerous and extreme heat is set to hit New York City by the end of the week, with temperatures expected to reach 95F on Friday.

The hot conditions come after warm weather at the beginning of this week, which saw highs of 83F on Monday. Today, the mercury is set to reach 80F, rising to 83F on Wednesday.

But starting from Thursday, NYC will become even warmer, reaching 89F in some places – before hitting 95F on Friday. New Yorkers have also been warned that a weather system moving in will cause heavy rain and storms across the city later this week.

The latest high temperature forecast shows that the heat is progressively building up. Tomorrow, highs of 83F are expected, then rising to 89F on Thursday and 95F on Friday. However, feels-like temperatures will be much higher than that.

On Thursday, it will be 96F and on Friday 102F, according to the latest weather maps. If you head out to enjoy a picnic or spend time by the shore, you should remember to apply sunscreen regularly, because of the high UV index.

As NYC experiences extreme and dangerous heat on Friday, humidity will reach high levels, making it difficult for our bodies to regulate temperature and stay cool. Usually, then when it is hot, we sweat so we can cool down – as when the sweat evaporates, that process pulls heat from our skin, lowering our body temperature.

However, when it is as hot as we expect it to be on Friday, the air is nearly saturated with moisture. This means the sweat can’t evaporate properly and our body temperature rises, with the risk of reaching dangerous levels.

With the heat, you should remember to stay hydrated, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. It is also important to check-up on more vulnerable people such as seniors and children, as well as pets.

The Jersey Shore will have 76F today and 80F tomorrow. Weather maps show that temperatures will reach 78F in Connecticut on Tuesday and 82F on Wednesday.
