MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is warning motorists to be weather aware.
Weather predictions across the state show scattered showers and some are predicted to be heavy, and LA DOTD warns heavy rainfall can cause flash flooding.
Motorists are advised to avoid driving if possible during heavy rain. LA DOTD reminds drivers that passenger vehicles can be swept away in as little as six inches of water, and it is often hard to tell how deep water is during heavy rain.
Their advice is if in doubt: Turn around. Don’t Drown.
Various state and parish agencies can sometimes block roads when water is dangerous, but LA DOTD says during flash flooding areas can quickly turn from safe to dangerous. They say be aware of any ponding, even if barricades are not present.
