Good Question: How do I get my driver’s license on my cell phone?

  • May 29, 2026

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Digital wallets can solve a lot of problems and cut time, with credit cards, event tickets and even vaccination records all capable of being stored on your smartphone.

And here in Kentucky, you can now get a digital copy of your driver’s license.

For today’s Good Question, Lonnie asks: “How do I get my driver’s license on my cell phone?”

WKYT Streaming AppsWhat the app is

In 2021, Apple announced plans to develop an app that would allow people to put their driver’s license or ID on their phone. But it wasn’t until earlier this year that Kentucky’s version of that program went online.

That program isn’t limited to iPhones, but you do have to download an app to take part.

It’s called Kentucky Mobile ID, and the Transportation Cabinet says it allows you to put a secure digital version of your state ID on your phone.

How to get it

Once you’ve downloaded the app, you do have to register your phone number, take a picture of your ID and take a live selfie.

Where you can use it

The digital ID can be used at TSA checkpoints at airports, but you will still need to keep your license on you if you’re driving.

When the app was released, Kentucky State Police reminded drivers that law enforcement in Kentucky can only accept your physical license during a traffic stop.
