Santa Barbara Public Library’s (SBPL) SB Reads 2025 title, and first graphic novel selection is “The Magic Fish” by Trung Le Nguyen.
Readers are encouraged to start exploring the book in preparation for SB Reads events taking place from late October through late November.
SBPL will host a series of programs targeting the book’s themes, including a kickoff event, book discussions, art workshops, and a community storytelling night.
“This beautifully illustrated and deeply moving story follows Tiến, a young boy navigating life through fairy tales,” the city said. “Exploring themes of identity, immigration, communication, and creative expression, author Trung Le Nguyen reminds us that where we are from shapes who we become, and that we are all connected.”
In late October, hundreds of free print copies of the book will be available in English and Spanish at all SBPL locations, while supplies last.
Readers who want to start early can check out the print edition or e-book from the library.

Each year, during SB Reads, SBPL distributes free copies of a selected title and invites the community to engage in events and discussions focused on the book.
“We hope that readers will connect with one another by exploring themes, participating in discussions, and examining the world through different viewpoints,” the city said.
