While the Dallas Mavericks aren’t in this year’s NBA Finals, North Texas fans can still cheer for players with local ties.
The San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks will face off for the Larry O’Brien Trophy this year. San Antonio’s roster has a familiar face in forward Harrison Barnes, while New York is led by former Mavericks playmaker Jalen Brunson.
Here’s a look at the players with local ties in the NBA Finals:
Barnes is an established veteran looking for his second NBA championship. The forward played for the Mavericks from 2016-19, until he was traded to the Sacramento Kings. Barnes has spent the last two seasons in San Antonio.
Kornet has become a key member of San Antonio’s frontcourt, stepping in to spell superstar Victor Wembanyama on the court. The Argyle Liberty Christian product is seeking his second NBA title. He won his first in 2024, when the Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks.
Before Ingram made it to the NBA, he built up his skill set in the Dallas area. He attended St. Mark’s as a high scholer. The Spurs selected Ingram in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft.
Mavericks fans may find it a bit difficult to root for Brunson, considering how he left Dallas. He spent the first four years of his professional career with the Mavericks, quickly becoming one of the league’s top young guards. His play has only improved since he joined the Knicks.
Before Sochan made it to the NBA, he played at Baylor during the 2021-22 season. He started his professional career with the Spurs, who selected him in the first round of the 2022 NBA draft.
