JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The last firefighter injured in Wednesday’s major Jacksonville furniture store fire was discharged from the hospital today, while the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, a fire was reported at Furniture Plus on North Marine Boulevard.
The fire burned for hours before crews brought it under control around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday.
WITN drone footage showed smoke engulfing the building as part of the main showroom roof collapsed, and aerial trucks poured water onto the fire.
The building has been declared a total loss, and employees were back at the site Thursday, trying to recover what they could.
Five firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. Two were treated and released at the scene, while three were taken to the hospital. The last firefighter was released today, and no other injuries were reported.
More than 10 fire departments assisted the Jacksonville Fire Department in fighting the fire.
Store owner Greg Popkin said more than 30 people worked at the store. The initial plan is to move employees to the family’s High Point location on Lejeune Boulevard.
Employees said they are devastated by the loss of the building, which has been owned by the Popkin family since 1978.
