The ruthless tennis schedule has rapidly moved on from Wimbledon, with many ATP and WTA stars now taking on the Washington Open.

Action at the Washington Open is now underway, where Venus Williams has attracted plenty of attention with her return to tennis.

But also on the horizon is the Canadian Open, with the ATP Tour heading to Toronto and the WTA Tour heading to Montreal.

The ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournaments start later this month, with the US Open following shortly afterwards in the calendar.

The tennis schedule certainly needs analysing amid this current run, highlighted by the withdrawal of many star names from the upcoming events.

Grand Slams themselves have been a major focus of the debate, with Nick Kyrgios wanting best-of-five sets from the quarterfinals onwards for both men and women.

But sharing his verdict on such a change midway through an event, former world number one Andy Roddick said on his Served podcast: “I don’t like starting a tournament one way and then changing the entire dynamic of the tournament at a panic.

“There are things that women go through and most likely a lot of them are going through at some point over the course of a two week event that men don’t have to go through. So very simply, that gets left out of every argument and rolling the dice on when that happens is insane.

“You throw in best of five and there is some contrast overlap with what a woman is going through at that time. I don’t like it at all. I don’t like starting a tournament in one format and finishing it in one format.

“I did not like it in the Masters 1000 on the men’s side, when you get to the final and they go ‘I know you have had a long week, but let’s play seven hours before we go to a Grand Slam’.

“I don’t like starting a tournament one way and finishing it in another, that does not define the best players.

“I think it completely changes the dynamic of what has already been accomplished in that Slam up until that point.”

What are the ATP and WTA schedules up to the US Open?

While there are plenty of high-profile players in action in the build-up to the US Open, withdrawals have unfortunately been a common theme.

Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa are out of the Canadian Open, as are Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Jack Draper and Novak Djokovic.

It’s a remarkable list on both sides, with players either fatigued or injured after a very busy and demanding season so far.

And there is still a lot of tennis to be played before the year is out, with the small matter of the US Open beginning in New York next month.
