Four firefighters were transported by EMS to area hospitals for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries. No civilians were injured, police said.
The fire was brought under control just before 11 a.m. and FDNY fire marshals are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
Inspectors from the city’s Department of Buildings were called to the scene for a structural stability inspection following the fire. They found fire damage to the second floor, including extensive charring and portions of an open roof. DOB issued a full vacate order for the building and ordered the building owner to install a sidewalk shed at the front of the building due to a section of cornice, the horizontal decorative molding that crowns a building, missing and another section of cornice hanging loose.
The American Red Cross registered five adults for emergency assistance and its Disaster Action Team connected with the five residents to provide financial assistance and a safe place to stay as they begin to recover. Red Cross caseworkers will also meet with them to help identify remaining recovery roadblocks. Any residents impacted by the fire at 10-15 48th Ave. who need help with their recovery and have not already connected with the Red Cross can call 1-877-Red Cross (877-733-2767) and select Option 1.
