Around Texas

1. North Texas Republicans gather for ‘Red Rally’ ahead of special session

Some North Texas Republicans gathered for what is being called the first-ever Texas Red Rally, as state lawmakers head back to work in Austin for a special session that began on Monday.

“We wanted to explain to those who don’t know and to kind of remind everybody what the party does, what the Republican Party stands for, principles,” said Sharon Henson, leader of the Rockwall County Republican Party.

2. House Democrats consider special session quorum break

Texas House Democrats have a history of breaking quorum to slow down the redistricting process. The rare mid-decade reworking of the state’s congressional map is a direct order from President Donald Trump, who believes lawmakers can rework four of the state’s districts to create five new Republican districts.

3. Texas ranks No. 1 in nation for euthanasia. Some nonprofits are hoping to bring the number down

According to Best Friends Animal Society, Texas ranks first in the nation for shelter deaths. Shelters euthanized roughly 86,000 adoptable cats and dogs.

The good news? More than 75% of Texas shelter pets were saved last year. Dallas Animal Services launched its Be Dallas 90 program to create positive outcomes for 90% of its population.
