JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – People are looking for ways to beat the heat as some areas see record temperatures, despite it being only June 12.
Kids played in splash pads, and others enjoyed ice cream to stay cool in the record-breaking heat across many inland areas. A heat advisory remained in effect until 8 p.m. this evening.
“It’s really hot out today and just not a lot of places where they can go and cool off and actually have a good time,” said Alex Feliciano, a Jacksonville resident. “There are good neighborhoods out here, so it’s not bad at all.”
As kids enjoy summer and parents look for ways to get their kids out of the house, but some workers are forced to spend their days in the heat.
Michael Connors, Jacksonville assistant public services director, said they have safety programs every month about keeping their employees safe in the heat. He said on-site resources for workers are plentiful.
“We provide unlimited sources of water and hydration,” Connors said. “So, we have electrolytes that are available to them to put in their waters, we have coolers and ice machines that we fill up the trucks with before they go out.”
Saturday, air temperatures will be cooler, but humidity will be higher, so the heat index will remain largely unchanged, according to WITN Chief Meteorologist Charlie Ironmonger.
