OPINION — As a Maricopa County resident, I believe we need honest discussion about the tools available to law enforcement and the realities they face every day. Public safety depends on dedicated officers, and on providing them with proven tools that help them do their jobs effectively.
License plate readers, commonly known as LPRs, are one of those tools. They help identify stolen vehicles, locate wanted suspects, recover missing persons and generate investigative leads that might otherwise be missed. These are practical, real-world benefits that directly impact public safety and make our communities safer.
The need for these tools is even greater given staffing challenges facing many law enforcement agencies today. The Phoenix Police Department serves approximately 1.7 million residents across more than 515 square miles while operating hundreds of officers below authorized staffing levels.
