The Dick’s Perfect Game All-American Classic returns to San Diego next month, and the West team’s roster will feature a San Diego high school star.

AJ Curry, an outfielder/pitcher at University City High School, will take part in the Aug. 17 game at Petco Park.

Curry, a San Diego Section All-CIF player, led University City to a section Division 3 championship with two hits and eight strikeouts in five innings vs. Calexico, then had three hits and struck out nine in four innings as the Centurions beat Mt. Carmel in the Division 3 Southern California Regional championship.

The All-American Classic features many of the top high school uperclassmen in the country. Among them are Grady Emerson, the top-ranked high school player in the nation; Jack Lombard, son of Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard; Joseph Contreras, son of former All-Star pitcher Jose Contreras; Miller Sheets, son of four-time MLB All-Star Ben Sheets; and Trey Ebel, son of Dodgers third-base coach Dino Ebel.

Managed by Padres great Trevor Hoffman, the West roster includes 13 players from California. Curry is the only San Diegan.

Curry, who has committed to play college ball at Tennessee, hit .417 last season with one home run and 14 RBIs. He also stole 26 bases.

As a pitcher, Curry went 8-4 with a 1.14 ERA. In 61 1/3 innings, he allowed 33 hits, walked 37 and struck out 111. Opponents hit just .155 against him.

Petco Park hosted the Classic from 2006-19 and again in 2021 before the event moved to Phoenix. Organizers announed in February that the game would return to San Diego.
