National Weather Service officials are expecting possible thunderstorms with winds up to 60 mph and large hail Tuesday in the Chicago area.
Scattered thunderstorms are possible in portions of north central and northeast Illinois, and northwest Indiana, officials said.
Officials said there is a slight risk for storms in several counties including Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kendall, Kane, DuPage, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois, Ford, northern, southern, central Cook counties, as well as northern, southern and eastern Will counties in Illinois. In Indiana, Porter, Newton, Jasper and Benton counties are at risk of thunderstorms, officials said.
In the storms, up to 60 mph winds are expected in the morning hours, officials said. Up to a half-dollar sized hail may batter some areas, officials said.
On Wednesday, there is a significant chance of more thunderstorms likely to redevelop along a cold front passing over far eastern Illinois and northwest Indiana, officials said.
Those storms are expected in the late morning to early afternoon hours. Officials also are expecting dangerous conditions at Lake Michigan beaches Wednesday and Thursday.
The first round of storms Wednesday are expected to bring winds up to 75 mph and golf-ball sized hail, officials warned. The greatest risk is expected near or south of I-80.
Dangerous thunderstorms are a possibility south of I-80 into northwest Indiana Wednesday late in the afternoon and evening capable of producing up to 80 mph winds. Torrential rainfall is expected which could result in flash flooding, officials said.
Current conditions at O’Hare International Airport registered as mostly cloudy at 69 degrees, and farther south at Midway Airport temperatures and conditions are the same.
