ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The NAACP Onslow County Branch is speaking out against two bills being considered by state lawmakers.
The branch joined the community and NAACP leaders at the State Capitol today to oppose House Bills 1038 and 958.
The group says the bills could change how Onslow County residents are represented in local government.
House Bill 1038 would have all Jacksonville voters elect all six city council members, instead of electing representatives from specific districts.
HB 958 would make several changes to election laws, such as new voting requirements for some voters and changing how ballots are counted and reviewed after elections.
“We are here to ensure that the legislative process remains accessible to and representative of the people it affects,” said M. Kenyatta Euring, president of the NAACP Onslow County Branch.
Euring said the trip to the Capitol aimed to remind lawmakers that people want a say before major changes are made.
The branch also presented the Onslow Civic Education Initiative to county commissioners.
That initiative includes a $15,000 investment to help get more residents involved in local government, civic education for students, and military outreach.
