NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 were proud sponsors of Opal’s Walk For Freedom which took place on Friday, June 19, 2026. This year’s scenic 2.5 mile walk kicked off at Will Rogers Square in Fort Worth and went through the cultural district passing by the Botanic Garden, Dickie’s Arena, The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, The Kimbell Art Museum, and Casa Mañana.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and traces its origin to Texas, where 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, freedom of enslaved people was enforced.
