CROCKETT, Texas (KTRE) – Emergency responders recovered the body of a Houston-area teenager from a vehicle found submerged in a creek Saturday afternoon.
According to Houston County Sheriff Zak Benge, dispatch received a call at 11 a.m. concerning a teenager who was overdue to reach his home near Houston after leaving Houston County Lake.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., the Houston County Emergency Management coordinator was traveling on FM 229 and noticed damage to a guardrail just off of Loop 304. The EMC coordinator and a deputy were able to locate a front bumper with the missing teens license plate attached approximately 70 yards down the creek and the roof of a submerged car down the creek approximately 30 yards further. A Texas Parks and Wildlife Search and Rescue team, which was already deployed to the area because of localized flooding, were called to respond as well as Houston County Search and Rescue.
Shortly after the teams’ arrival the body of the teen was removed from the vehicle. An investigation into the exact cause of the crash is being conducted by the Crockett Police Department.
“This is a tragic event that will affect many of this young man’s family and friends,” Benge said. “The search for and recovery of the young victim was an effort comprised of members of the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, Crockett Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Houston County Emergency Management, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Crockett Fire Department and Houston County Search and Rescue.”
