Filmmaker Mike Flanagan has directed many horror films, solidified as one of the best to take on the genre in recent years. Soon, one of his more overlooked genre films can be revisited for free as it’s heading to a new streaming home with no subscription required.

On Aug. 16, Ouija: Origin of Evil will be made available to stream for free (with ad support) on Tubi. The film is currently available on Netflix, but it can’t be watched on that platform without a paid subscription. The Ouija follow-up getting its new streaming home comes nearly a full decade after the movie first debuted on the big screen, where it made over $81 million against a budget of around $10 million.

1 of the Best Stephen King Movies in Years Hits Hulu Next Month

There are many Stephen King adaptations out there, and one of his best movies is coming to Hulu.

The film was directed by Flanagan, who co-wrote the script with Jeff Howard. It serves as a prequel to 2014’s Ouija, which was directed by Stiles White. The prequel only brought back one original cast member, as Lin Shaye had a cameo in a post-credit sequence. It is otherwise a more original story about a widow whose youngest daughter gets inadvertently possessed with the use of a Ouija board. Elizabeth Reaser, Lulu Wilson, Annalise Basso, and Henry Thomas star.

Ouija: Origin of Evil Saw an Immense Jump in Its Reception

The difference in the reception between the two films was not even close. The original Ouija film was not welcomed with open arms, falling with an approval rating of just 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. Ouija: Origin of Evil conversely has a Certified Fresh score of 83%, landing almost 80 percentage points higher than the original.

Despite this impressive feat, Ouija: Origin of Evil could also be seen as underrated. The film does not seem to be spoken about as often as Flanagan’s subsequent horror works, including the Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep and his many Netflix shows, like The Haunting of Hill House. For fans who’ve enjoyed Flanagan’s other movies but have not yet seen Ouija: Origin of Evil, checking the film out for free on Tubi may be worth the time.

Flanagan, whose other films include Oculus, Hush, and Gerald’s Game, most recently took a break from the genre. While his latest film, The Life of Chuck, is based on a Stephen King story, it was not horror in nature. A fantasy drama, the film was just released in theaters last month. It holds a score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. He’s heading right back into the genre, however, as he is working on a new installment of the Exorcist franchise as well as a TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie.
