Two years after H-E-B opened its first grocery store in Fort Worth, another shop could soon be in development in the North Texas metro. Based on recent movements by the San Antonio-based grocer, Cowtown might be getting a second location in the near future.
As reported by the Dallas Morning News, the Fort Worth City Council has approved a request to rezone around five acres of land owned by H-E-B at the intersection of Blue Mound and East Bonds Ranch roads. The rezoning changes the five acres from agricultural use to industrial use, with the land reportedly being proposed for a “large retail store.”
H-E-B officials confirmed with MySA that while the company does own the land, there is no timeline for when a potential new store would be built.
H-E-B’s growth in North Texas
The rezoning is the latest in H-E-B’s growing investment in North Texas. In the past four years, the company has opened locations in Plano, Mansfield, Frisco, McKinney, Rockwall, and Allen, including H-E-B’s first Dallas store, a $52 million development targeting a 2028 opening, according to construction filings. H-E-B has had a presence in Fort Worth for more than 20 years, thanks to Central Market opening a store in October 2001. However, the city did not receive an official grocery store in April 2024.
