A Philadelphia man was charged with assaulting a SEPTA police officer by throwing a cup of hot coffee on him.

Denzel Deverteuil, 38, was charged with assault of law enforcement officer and fleeing or attempting to elude police.

According to SEPTA Police on July 20 about 2 p.m., SEPTA Transit Police observed a disturbance between two males in front of the turnstiles at the 69th Street Terminal.

While an officer attempted to de-escalate the situation, one of the males threw a hot coffee on the officer.

The offender then attempted to flee and was taken into custody without further incident. The officer nor the offender suffered any injuries.

Deverteuil was arraigned by District Judge Michael Burns, who set a bail of 10% of $250,000. The suspect was unable to post bail and was taken to Delaware County prison, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 6 before District Judge Elysia Mancini Duerr.
