PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A father is grieving the loss of his daughter and soon-to-be grandson after a deadly crash over the weekend.
David Potts said his daughter, 19-year-old Leila Potts, was preparing to deliver his first grandson before the crash happened.
“I never get to see my daughter again. I’ll never even get to meet my grandson,” David Potts said.
Police said the driver of the car in which Leila Potts was a passenger ran a red light and slammed into another vehicle, killing Leila Potts, who was sitting in the passenger seat. Her father said the driver was her boyfriend and the father of her baby.
The crash
Saturday night around 11:30 p.m., David Potts said Leila’s boyfriend picked her up from a shift at Home Depot in north Phoenix.
“Still smiling through all of it, even with her complaining about how bad her feet hurt,” David Potts said.
Police say the person behind the wheel ran a red light and crashed into another car.
Leila Potts was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors delivered her baby, Vincent. Neither of them survived.
“Vincent had a full head of hair, like he was a grown man. I really wish I could have held him,” David Potts said.
The driver
Police said the driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Phoenix police have not confirmed who was driving the car, but David Potts said it was his daughter’s boyfriend.
“I mean, I still love him. I don’t wish anything ill on him. I don’t hate him,” David Potts said. “The only reason it’s going to take a while for me to talk to him is because every time I see him, I’m going to see her.”
Phoenix police do not believe impairment was a factor. No charges have been filed yet.
Phoenix police said any future charges are part of their ongoing investigation.
David Potts said he wants justice.
“I know how much he’s hurting. And I know it’s not easy to lose your baby. Obviously, I know,” David Potts said.
