As May makes the jump to the NBA level and takes over as the Dallas Mavericks’ head coach, Cuban shared some thoughts on the franchise’s latest hiring decision. On Monday, the former Mavericks majority owner told The Dallas Morning News’ Mike Curtis that he had met May earlier in his coaching career.
“He is an Indiana grad. I met him way back when he worked as a student manager and video coach,” Cuban wrote in an email. “I’m sure he will do a great job.”
May has enjoyed an impressive rise through the coaching ranks. He was a student manager at Indiana from 1996 until he graduated from the school in 2000. After a brief stint as a video coordinator and assistant coach at USC, May returned to his alma mater in 2002 and served as a video coordinator and assistant at Indiana from 2002-05.
May later held assistant jobs at schools like Eastern Michigan, Murray State, UAB, Louisiana Tech and Florida. He took over as Florida Atlantic’s head coach in 2018, leading the school to the Final Four five years later. May notably led Michigan to a national title win this year.
