LA GRANGE, N.C. (WITN) – Several roads in La Grange are getting repaved after years of waiting.
NCDOT has begun repaving 10 of the roads in La Grange as part of a plan that has been in the works for years.
Residents said many roads are difficult to drive on because of their current condition.
“There are potholes, ruts, and seams in the road. It’s just horrible,” La Grange resident Rosemarie Cheney said.
The town also plans to repave several streets La Grange is in charge of maintaining over the next year.
La Grange Town Manager Shawn Condon said the work is needed.
“It’s a tremendous need. It’s been decades since there’s been substantial paving and maintenance,” Condon said.
The NCDOT work is expected to be finished in August or September. Condon said town-maintained roads should be completed by this time next year based on a rough timeline.
Condon said La Grange is waiting until it adopts its budget next month to begin work on the town-maintained roads.
He said the upcoming construction is the most significant road work in at least 20 years in La Grange.
The work by NCDOT in La Grange will cost $3.49 million. The town-funded paving is estimated to cost around $2 million.
The roads NCDOT will be working on are:
NC 903, New Hope Road, Firetower Road, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Fields Station Road, East & West Railroad Street, North Forbes Street, Herring Rd/Ed Herring Rd, North Charles Street, and Washington Street.
Condon said the NCDOT project was originally supposed to happen years ago, but the town and DOT agreed to wait until La Grange finished a major infrastructure repair project. That led to the current completion timeline.
