Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar – Deputy-involved-shooting (June 24, 2026)
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A man wielding large knives in a West Side neighborhood is expected to survive after he was shot twice by a deputy with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
A call for help came in around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday regarding a man carrying miniature samurai-style blades. Sheriff Javier Salazar says witnesses told BCSO the man was going onto different properties and then hiding on porches in the 8400 block of Knapp Rise, not far from Culebra Road.
Deputies tried to communicate with the man, who was ordered several times to drop the weapons. Investigators say he not only refused to drop the knives, but later started moving toward multiple deputies. At one point, one deputy fired several shots, hitting the man twice.
The suspect was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but he is expected to survive after successful surgery. Investigators say the man is in his 30s, and authorities are trying to identify him, along with his place of residence.
Sheriff Salazar says the man was likely having some kind of mental health episode, but that had yet to be confirmed.
The deputies involved in the shooting are all on administrative duty pending multiple investigations, and the deputy who fired shots is a 16-veteran of the force.
