On the second day of training camp, the New York Jets had an injury scare. The veteran quarterback Justin Fields went down with a setback that required him to be carted off the field.

Once the cart came out, NFL fans couldn’t help but think of the worst-case scenario. Former Washington Commanders star Robert Griffin III fell under that category and made a quick suggestion for the New York Jets: Go out and get Kirk Cousins.

“If Justin Fields is out for the season, the New York Jets need to trade for Kirk Cousins,” Griffin wrote on social media on Thursday morning.

That was a message that followed up, “Prayers up for Justin Fields.”

Fortunately, the Jets received positive news on Fields’ setback. According to the team, he is dealing with a toe injury. For now, it seems like a minor setback.

It’s unclear when Fields will be able to get back out on the field for the Jets, but they don’t have to take Griffin’s advice and rush to make a deal.

With that said, Cousins is a quarterback to keep an eye on this year. As he remains on the Atlanta Falcons, Cousins is battling for the team’s starting quarterback position. He had it for some time last year, but eventually lost out to the 2024 first-round pick, Michael Penix.

Last season, Cousins led the Falcons to a 7-7 record in 14 starts. He completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,508 yards and 18 touchdowns. Cousins threw for a league-high 16 interceptions. He also led the league with 13 fumbles.

Although Cousins has proven to be a decent passer throughout his career, which started in Washington and continued in Minnesota, Cousins’ previous two seasons haven’t gone as well as his teams would hope.

During the 2023 NFL season, Cousins tore his Achilles in Week 8. He missed the remainder of the season. The veteran quarterback would hit the free agency market the following spring and ended up signing a multi-year deal with the Falcons.

Atlanta invested a top 10 pick in a quarterback last season, which placed a timer on Cousins’ stint with the team. While he’s a valuable vocal veteran to have around, the Falcons surely didn’t pay Cousins $180 million to hold the clipboard. Maybe another team will take him on if they grow desperate. While the Jets could give him a look later, the injury to Fields doesn’t seem to be concerning enough to make that type of move.
