“My life is an accomplishment” – Charles Barkley on why failing to win an NBA championship doesn’t bother him originally appeared on Basketball Network.
Charles Barkley is one of those great players who never won an NBA Championship.

Barkley got very close in 1993, but his buddy, Chicago Bulls icon Michael Jordan, ousted his Phoenix Suns in six games in the NBA Finals. The Suns remained a top team even after their defeat, but they struggled mightily in the playoffs, prompting Chuck to leave Phoenix for Houston.
Ahead of his season debut with the Rockets, Barkley was pestered with questions about winning a title. He was getting old fast. He couldn’t jump and run like he used to so analysts became concerned about whether he still had the willpower to win. Chuck alleviated such concerns by sharing his life story and how making it to the NBA alone was a victory lap.
“You know, I’ve been reading about how much a championship means to me. Hey, it’d be great to win a championship, don’t get me wrong. But God, c’mon! I have to look at the big picture,” Barkley said to the Los Angeles Times in 1996.

Just a kid from Alabama
Like many NBA players, Barkley came from humble beginnings. Before he became one of the greatest power forwards ever, Chuck was just a kid from a small town. The fact that he was able to propel himself to greater heights was a major milestone.
“When I try to tell people that, they won’t believe me. For some reason, they think they know what I’m thinking… I’m a little kid from Leeds, Alabama, and I have to look at everything I’ve accomplished in my life. My life is an accomplishment. Me winning another few games and getting a ring, that won’t be an accomplishment to me. That will be a team accomplishment, but I have to look at my individual accomplishment as my life. Your life is your accomplishment, not trophies and rings and money and things like that.”

“I mean, you think about this: I’m a little kid from a town with a couple hundred people, and I grew up to be Charles Barkley.”
Pizza champion
Barkley did not just utter those comments for show. Over the years, he’s been a good sport whenever his colleagues poke fun at his ringless resume. Sir Charles even delivered one of the funniest monologues about being a pizza-eating champion, which, in many ways, exceeds the feeling of winning the Larry O’Brien trophy.

“You got your pepperoni, your sausage, your mushrooms, your onions. It’s like a party in your mouth. And speaking of parties, that’s what basketball is all about, right? It’s a party on the court. And what’s a party without pizza? It’s like Shaq without Kobe or MJ without Scottie. It just doesn’t work,” Barkley said.
“Let me tell you something, folks. Pizza and basketball go together like peanut butter and jelly. And let me tell you, I know a thing or two about pizza. I mean, I may not have won a championship, but I’ve definitely won a pizza-eating contest or two.”
It’s been a minute since we last saw him on the hardcourt, but he continues to bring a smile to our faces with his crazy antics and brutal honesty. He’s truly a one-of-a-kind individual.
