KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – Officials with the Kinston Police Department are speaking about a bear being spotted in the area.
After concerns were raised by residents, Kinston Police acknowledged the black bear sighting on social media.
Kinston Police Chief Keith Goyette tells WITN the bear was last seen near the 900 block of Fairfield Avenue around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Chief Goyette says that the bear was spotted at West Washington Avenue early Saturday afternoon – adding that the bear was “on the move.”
Officials are asking residents to give the bear plenty of space. Officials go on to say not to approach, feed, or stop to take pictures with the bear.
Kinston officials add that black bears are usually just passing through, and that once it gets dark, it will likely head back toward its natural habitat on its own.
Kinston Police say this will help keep the community and the bear safe.
