CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) – A 15-year-old boy drowned Saturday while trying to retrieve a 5 year old that was floating on an inflatable device in Lake Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Police Department.
A preliminary investigation indicated the 15 year old drowned trying to retrieve the 5 year old, who floated into deeper water, police spokesperson Amanda Bragg wrote in a press release.
Bragg wrote the teenager called out for help twice before disappearing under the water near the Lake Jacksonville Campgrounds.
Bystanders and a boater in the area immediately responded and recovered the teenager from the water, with the boater giving lifesaving efforts until first responders arrived, Bragg wrote.
Despite their efforts, the teen was pronounced dead at a local hospital, and next of kin was notified, Bragg wrote.
“The Jacksonville Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” Bragg wrote in the release. “We also recognize the courageous efforts of the citizens who acted immediately in an attempt to save the young man’s life.”
