After a House Oversight subcommittee voted to subpoena the Department of Justice to release the Jeffrey Epstein files, Rep. Robert Garcia of Long Beach Thursday demanded Committee Chair James Comer to “immediately” sign and deliver the subpoena.

Garcia’s letter to Comer demands the DOJ produce the complete files that detail the federal government’s investigation into Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, and his associates within 30 days of the subpoena.

“We are being clear and demanding that President Trump release the full Epstein files,” the committee’s top Democrat said Thursday morning in Long Beach.

Three Republicans on the Federal Law Enforcement Subcommittee joined the Democrats in approving the motion during Wednesday’s subcommittee meeting, which Garcia called “a huge win for the American public.”

Comer is forced to sign the subpoena as a result of the vote, but the letter ensures that the subpoena is comprehensive and the requested files will be produced in 30 days, according to Garcia. He added that Comer has promised that he will issue the official subpoena to the Justice Department.

“If you harmed and abused children, minors, young women, then you need to be held accountable for your crimes, and the Oversight Committee is ready to do just that,” the former Long Beach mayor said.

The subpoena requests the redaction of the names of the victims, their personal information and child sexual abuse material, according to the letter.

Earlier on Wednesday, Comer subpoenaed Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of Jeffrey Epstein, for a deposition at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee, Florida.

Garcia will represent House Democrats and the Oversight Committee at the deposition of Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year-sentence after being charged with federal sex-trafficking, in August, he announced.

Garcia warned of Thursday’s private meeting between Maxwell, her attorneys and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, alleging the Justice Department is not allowing any members of the Oversight Committee to be present.

“We think it is incredibly suspicious, dangerous and we’re very concerned with what’s happening at that conversation today between Miss Maxwell, the attorneys and Donald Trump’s Department of Justice, but we will ensure we have a deposition on our own,” the ranking member said.

Although he said Democrats wanted the files released, Garcia emphasized that the release of the files “has been Donald Trump’s issue.”

The fallout over the Epstein files has plagued President Trump and the Republican party’s agenda as the White House struggles to kill the story.

President Donald Trump and his aides have settled on silence as a strategy to stamp out criticism of his refusal to release files detailing the federal government’s investigation of Epstein, according to NBC News.

Republican leaders in Congress have, for the moment, largely evaded a bipartisan push to require the release of the Epstein files, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., adjourned his chamber early for its annual August recess.
