Think about the great sports rivalries, and when you get around to baseball, two teams are bound to come up: the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. For decades, baseball fans have watched these two storied franchises square off in the most famous rivalry in Major League Baseball, but the last time anyone watched them play on NBC, it was 1995.

A lot has happened in the last 30 years. The Red Sox finally broke their decades-long curse and took a World Series title in 2004, then added on three more in 2007, 2013, and 2018. In the same timespan, the Yankees added five more World Series titles to their own trophy case, and even built an entirely new Yankee Stadium. It’s a new baseball world, but the rivalry is as fierce as ever, and this week it finally returns to Sunday Night Baseball on NBC and Peacock.

How to watch Yankees vs. Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball

The Yankees and the Red Sox will return to NBC‘s airwaves Sunday, June 28 at 7 p.m. ET, live on NBC and streaming simultaneously on Peacock from historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. Bob Costas will lead pregame coverage alongside Anthony Rizzo, who will also provide “Inside the Pitch” coverage during the game. Jason Benetti will call the action alongside Will Middlebrooks and, for the first time, legendary seven-time Cy Young Award-winner Roger Clemens.

What to expect from Yankees vs. Red Sox

Ahead of the rivals’ four-game series which kicks off Thursday, June 25 and concludes on Sunday Night Baseball, the Yankees had dominated the matchups between these two teams so far this season, winning four of the first five games in their AL East division rivalry. It’s part of a larger trend that’s placed the Yankees atop the AL East at the time of writing, while the Red Sox are down at the very bottom of the division standings, struggling to get back to .500 amid a tough season. 

With some of the best pitching in MLB right now, New York has been a hard team to score against, with one of the best ERAs in the league. That means Wilson Contreras and the rest of the Red Sox batting corps will have their work cut out for them, but in a rivalry game, under the lights at Fenway Park, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an upset.
