Law enforcement agencies throughout Southern California are reminding residents how to have safely celebrate America’s 250th birthday
The Los Angeles Fire Department and other agencies across Southern California are advising residents on how to have a safe holiday weekend.
“Fireworks can turn a celebration into a tragedy in seconds,” The LAFD shared in a news release on Tuesday. “Every year, fireworks cause serious injuries, fires, and unnecessary risks to families, neighborhoods, pets, and first responders.”
All fireworks, including “safe and sane” fireworks, are illegal for personal possession or use in the City of Los Angeles and many other cities across Southern California. Additionally, all fireworks are prohibited in unincorporated Los Angeles County.
The LAFD is encouraging everyone to attend a permitted fireworks show or drone display and leave fireworks to the professionals.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station also advised residents when to, and when not to, call 911 during 4th of July celebrations. In a post shared on Tuesday, the station told residents that calling 911 simply because they hear fireworks ties up emergency lines for people who may need immediate help.
Officials say 911 should be used only for true emergencies, such as:

- A firework starts a brush or structure fire
- A home is on fire
- There is an immediate threat to life or property
Authorities say not to call 911 in situations such as:
- Your dogs are upset by fireworks
- You hear people setting off fireworks somewhere
- Firework debris is landing in your yard
- You can’t sleep because of the noise
If you know a specific location where fireworks are being used illegally, call your law enforcement’s non-emergency line. You can also report illegal fireworks anonymously at lacrimestoppers.org.
