With just over a quarter century of discography logged, Silverstein vocalist Shane Told has found himself doing a fair share of reflecting on the Canadian post-hardcore outfit’s history while plotting its next phase.
“When you get to this point, you really do think about the longevity and you think about your legacy,” Told said. “I think the legacy is important, and I think, you know, the fact that we do everything to a high standard is important.
“We pride ourselves that we made pretty good decisions throughout our career and that we made a lot of good songs and not too many bad ones.”
Because of this, Told admits that Silverstein has faced a champagne problem when curating its set list for its upcoming co-headlining jaunt alongside Story Of The Year, which will stop at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe July 28.

“When we toured last year, we were doing kind of an all-encompassing “25 years of Noise” tour where we were doing this really just elaborate show that started with our newest songs and we did our entire set in reverse chronological order,” Told explained.
For this tour, Told admits he is still mulling over which songs to slot in each night.
“I don’t really know what to play, like, should we play more older stuff? Should we do what we’ve been doing the whole time?,” Told pondered. “It’s something we constantly think about and it’s something that does not get easier, as we get longer in the tooth with having so many songs.”
While fans can certainly expect to hear hits like “Smile In Your Sleep,” “My Heroine” and “Smashed Into Pieces,” Told is mostly concerned with slipping in some deep cuts from the band’s expansive discography.
One thing that we do enjoy is bringing back some stuff we haven’t played in a while so that you know the people that do come see us and see us again and again and again, are excited that they get to hear some stuff that they didn’t hear last time. That’s important to me,” said Told.
Adding to the mix of Silverstein tunes will also be tunes from the band’s most recent works “Antibloom” and “Pink Moon.”
Told expressed interest in slotting in songs like “Mercy Mercy,” “Stress” and “I Love You But I Have To Let You Go” into the show, but he still wants to keep an element of surprise each night.
So whether fans show up to hear classics, deep cuts or rock out to new tracks, Told aims to provide the same experience for each section of the audience.
“It’s a high-energy show and it’s fun, too,” he said. “You can bring a friend, bring a date or go by yourself. I think either way you want to slice it, you can find something in there, if you want to rock out, if you want to get a little emo, if you want to, you know, stand in the back and drink a beer, you can do all those things.”
Adding to the ante of the evening is the tours co-headlining act Story Of The Year, who is touring alongside Silverstein for the first time in both bands’ careers.
“Those are great friends of ours and a band we’ve never actually done a full tour with,” said Told.
“It’s going to feel like a big party, just celebrating two bands that against the odds, have made themselves into these bands who have each had 20-plus-year careers.”
Because of this, Told promises an evening chock-full of entertainment.
“We’re there to entertain, we’re there to have a good time, we play the hits, we have a good time, we do a couple surprises, but we don’t go, we don’t take it too far. And at the end of the day, I think you know part of the reason that we’ve been so successful with our career as a live band,” he said.
