Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux says empowerment, focused enforcement, and targeted recruiting are helping drive recent public-safety gains in Dallas.

Comeaux joined Sarah Zubiate Bennett on the June 29 episode of Let’s Talk Local to discuss the leadership philosophy behind the Dallas Police Department’s progress.

Bennett noted during the interview that crime under Comeaux has reached its lowest level in more than a decade and asked what he believes is driving the results.

“I think the secret sauce is pretty much empowerment,” Comeaux said.

Comeaux said he has focused on giving command staff the authority to lead while encouraging officers to share ideas and take ownership inside the department.

“I’m giving them the ability to lead, and I think that really helps,” Comeaux said. “It gets buy-in not only from the command staff but also from the officers.”

He said officers work harder when they feel heard.

“When officers feel like they have a voice and they come to work and they’re a little bit happier, they’re going to work a little bit harder,” Comeaux said.

Comeaux also said Dallas police have prioritized pursuing fugitives and offenders with felony warrants.

“One of our big things that from day one when I got here, I wanted to make a focus to go after fugitives, to go after the worst of the worst, those who have felony warrants and they’re walking the streets of Dallas,” Comeaux said.

“If you’re wanted by the police, you’re wanted by the courts, we’re going to make you go see a judge,” he added. “We’re going to put you in jail.”

Recruiting has also become a major focus for DPD. Comeaux said the department has moved beyond traditional job fair tables and is using more targeted outreach, including social media campaigns.

“We’re catching up with the times,” Comeaux said. “It’s 2026.”

Comeaux said the department has studied the backgrounds of successful officers and is using that information to reach potential recruits, including former student athletes.

“Instead of just standing at a table handing out a flyer, let’s make sure we go to the athletic programs and hand out flyers,” Comeaux said.

Comeaux discussed crime reduction, recruiting, response times, downtown safety, and leadership inside DPD in the full Let’s Talk Local episode.
