Roads in a busy part of River North were closed Wednesday morning as Chicago police investigate a deadly shooting near several hotels and office buildings, with a heavy police presence on scene and dozens of yellow evidence markers scattered across the street.
The incident unfolded about 3:20 a.m. in the 500 block of North State Street, police said, when a 30-year-old man and a 65-year-old man were outside when they heard gunshots and felt pain.
According to police, the 30-year-old man was struck by gunfire multiple times and transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.
The 65-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds to the foot and was also transported to a nearby hospital, police said. He was last listed in fair condition.
Videos and photos from the scene show large strips of yellow and red police tape blocking off parts Grand Avenue and State Street, with tape seen in front of some hotels and office buildings. As many as 68 yellow evidence markers — typically placed near where shell casings are found– could be seen on the ground.
Windows of an office building could be seen riddled with bullet holes, with multiple detectives and police officers canvassing the scene.
According to police, an investigation was ongoing. No one was in custody.
